Workshop offerings
From a one-hour Masterclass to week-long residencies, this Jazz at Lincoln Center Musical Ambassador and Yamaha-sponsored artist and clinician DANA LEONG will deliver "hands down excellent" (NY Magazine) performances and workshops to your community. Dana will work with you to build a unique program for your audience. Sample topics include:

****Diversity and Urban Culture
For an Asian-American artist of Japanese and Chinese descent, growing up in San Francisco during the heyday of 90’s hip-hop, diversity and urban culture dominate his creative DNA. In this autobiographical lecture / demo, Dana Leong discusses the significance of hip-hop in today’s youth culture, and explores a variety of ethnic, social and musical influences that inform, challenge and shape his life as an artist.

****Artists as Entrepreneurs
This interactive lecture / demo deliver deeply into key aspects of Dana Leong’s artistic career, and the inner-workings of his life as an independent musician living and working in New York. He explores the ties between the different worlds of recording, performing, touring, and producing music in multiple genres, balance between business and art, tools to promote one’s music, and his recipe for success.

****We Are All Improvisers
Dana Leong shares his mind-stretching exercises to help musicians and artists of all levels and disciplines unlock their creative potential. By exploring methods used frequently in theater, public speaking, and poetry, Dana encourages participants to stimulate the parts of the brain which set motion to story-telling, the imagination, free association, and spontaneous musical creation.

****Rhymes and Rhythms

Members of Dana Leong’s ensemble Milk & Jade demonstrate their techniques for collaborations between musicians and vocalists. Rhythmic exercises and musical activities are provided for participants to explore their individual expression. Group discussions will explore history of hip-hop and creative ways incorporate personal emotion into music.

****Composing and Performing With Laptop
Have you ever seen a performance or listened to a piece of music and wondered, ‘how did they do that?’ From the fundamentals of choosing equipment to advanced concepts of sound manipulation, Dana Leong demonstrates the ins and outs of using computers to compose music and manipulate acoustic instruments.

****Jazz in the Hip-Hop World
Two of the world’s most popular musical genres are distinctly American and much more similar than we know. However, a few key differences give Hip-Hop and Jazz their own unique flavors. Dana Leong discusses trials, successes, discoveries, and helpful points which help to create powerful chemistry between the two genres, by dissecting instruments, classic rhythms, samples, drum patterns, and effective songwriting methods.

Hey House--it worked out great. The show was awesome, we had a packed house and I got the check from our accounting people 45 minutes before the show--so in the end--it all worked out! It was worth the work--they put on a great show.
Dan Sepion, Residential College Director, Washington University - Saint Louis, MO

GREAT! Everyone loved it. We had students through parents and staff in the audience and all ages loved it. Thanks so much.
Sharon Williamson - Cultural Arts Director - Colby Sawyer College, New London, NH

The show was great. Near the end of the semester so the students really got a lot out of it.
Len Harmon, Nichols College, Dudley, MA

Dana and company blew the roof off the place.. a crowd pleaser. We had an attendance of 175 with a balanced representation of the community, students and college staff. Dana did a wonderful job of keeping the audience engaged, our students stayed really tuned in. They were all very easy toe work with and made us all very comfortable to interact with from load-in to load-out. This program was just perfect for our Culture Fest 2009.
Chris Mikkelsen, Director of Student Activities - Normandale Community College - Bloomington, MN

“It is actually comforting that an artist of this generation has instilled his poetry with a universal vision that permeates the state of art, music, race and the world.”
All About Jazz

“Dana is an amazing teacher and performer. He is able to show new musical styles to the students in ways they understand, in an exciting but unthreatening and positive way. The students are completely enchanted by him. He is the essence of cool.
