Interview
  Shannon Curtis

When she was 7, Shannon Curtis’ piano teacher told her she played like a boy. Today, Shannon is still killing her piano and delivering a vocal performance in her signature style, breathtakingly intimate and disarmingly powerful. The Los Angeles Times describes Shannon Curtis as "a beautiful piano player who sounds like the love child of Fiona Apple and Norah Jones." As a performer, she endears her audiences with her living room demeanor and sparkling humor. As a songwriter, she is candid and unafraid. Shannon is currently touring in support of sophomore EP “Paris Can’t Have You” released on independent label Saint Cloud Records.

Shannon put on a great show. As a musician she was almost spot on to her recordings. It was a smaller crowd for the performance and Shannon hung out before the show talking to people and getting to know them so it was a fun show. The people that were there all really enjoyed Shannon. I received feedback from a few students that were very impressed with her and enjoyed the show. I know a good portion of the audience bought her cds. We enjoyed having Shannon on campus and she was great to work with

Shannon put on a really good performance and was flexible with us when the boom stand we had for her disappeared and she had to perform around a strait mic stand. . .despite that she did really well. She related to the students, has a beautiful voice and it was a nice change to have a piano playing instead of a guitar again. Overall the performance was good.

Shannon was great…she was easy to work with, but I don’t think that she knew that we didn’t have a monitor for her…she took it in stride and everything worked out fine. The audience really enjoyed her, and people stayed to hear the entire show…which is always great!

The concert last night was great!! Shannon was definitely the nicest artist we have worked with this year and her musical performance was even better! I will definitely pass her name of for future Musical Entertainment Chairs. Although the turnout to the concert wasn't excellent, Shannon made the concert very personal and intimate. Everyone loved it and I believe she did very well on merch sales. Thanks for sharing such an awesome individual with Linfield College!

Interview (back to top)
What was the first album you ever bought or had given to you?
Each summer when my sister and I went to stay at my grandma’s house, we went through a yearly ritual that led to the purchase of my first cassette tape. She would empty out her piggy bank into which she had put her loose change from the previous year, we’d take it to the bank to have it counted out, and then we’d get to buy whatever we wanted with this enormous sum of money (usually around $10). The year I discovered music, I convinced my little sister that we should pool our money and buy an Amy Grant tape. That purchase was the first of the steady diet of Amy Grant that I grew up on.

Worst/best/interesting job you ever had growing up?
I worked a lot as a babysitter growing up. One evening I was asked to watch the 7-year-old girl next door while her parents went out. During the course of the evening, she first refused to take a bath, later she threw up in the bath tub, and to finish off the night, she chased me around the house hurling swear words at me like a trucker and threatening to stab me with the huge knife she had gotten from the kitchen. That was the worst job I ever had. I don’t remember how I eventually got the knife away from her, but I do remember that I never went next door again.

What influences do you feel are most apparent in your writing?
When I was young, my dad – who was a self-taught piano player – would sit down after dinner and play old standard songs while I would dance around and sing on our green shag carpet. I haven’t listened to that music for years, but since I started writing music for the piano, I am finding that early influence seeping into my writing. Some of my songs sound old-fashioned. I’m pretty certain that’s why.

Where do you find inspiration from as an artist and musician?
I find my inspiration in relationships, in experiences of self-discovery. I write a lot of love songs.

Who are some of your favorite artists, musicians or bands?
I’ve been a fan of Sarah McLachlin for a while. I also like Fiona Apple, Alison Krauss and I recently discovered Beth Orton. I’m a long-time fan of U2 and Radiohead, and I have a soft spot for Coldplay. But more recently, I’ve been listening a lot to an Australian band called Youth Group, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Arcade Fire, Explosions in the Sky.

How do you pass the time on the road between performances?
Well, driving takes up a bunch of that time. So, I spend time admiring the scenery, listening to music, reading (when I’m not driving!), knitting (also a non-driving activity). If I have time off in a city where I’m playing, I love to leisurely eat at a local restaurant or catch a movie.

Humorous story or incident that happened at a previous performance or on the road?
A few months ago, my boyfriend accompanied me on a tour to the pacific northwest. When I was pulled over and given my first speeding ticket ever, I was extremely angry. I fumed for over an hour about how cops should be out fighting crime instead of giving out tickets. Jamie listened patiently for a while, but when he had reached his limit, he said, “Well, they are the California Highway Patrol. It’s their job to patrol the highways. And they give out tickets because speed kills.” That’s like the last thing I wanted to hear, but I decided it was time for me to stop complaining. A few hours later, while cruising down a mountain pass in Oregon, Jamie was pulled over as well. And when the Oregon State Trooper leaned in to deliver the ticket, this is what he said: “Well, Mr. Hill, I’m not sure what you guys get away with down there in California, but here in Oregon we think that going 83 in a 65 is dangerous. And so I’m giving you this ticket as a reminder to slow down because you know, speed kills.” Justice!

Biggest pet peeve while on the road?
I can’t STAND it when I’m hungry and there is nothing to eat but McDonald’s.
